The U.S. National Science Foundation plans to invest $47 million over five years in a pilot intended to produce industry-integrated science and engineering doctorates in four years.
The initiative is expected to support more than 250 doctoral students at nearly three dozen universities, with private companies participating in placements and research guidance.

Students will be co-advised by academic and industry mentors and complete an industry placement lasting at least one year. NSF says the first cohort is scheduled to begin in fall 2026.
Under the model, a participating university funds the student's first year. NSF provides support for the remaining years, while the industry partner covers costs for at least one year of the placement.
The agency described the pilot as a response to changing career paths for advanced STEM graduates. NSF cited data showing that more than 65% of doctoral recipients with definite commitments in selected science and engineering fields were headed to industry.
A four-year target is shorter than many conventional U.S. doctoral timelines. Reaching it will depend on program design, research scope, advising, student progress and whether academic and industry schedules can be coordinated.

NSF says the structure is meant to preserve rigorous academic research while giving students experience with commercial research settings and workforce needs. The announcement does not replace existing doctoral programs or require all participants to work in industry after graduation.
University and company commitments add resources beyond NSF's appropriation, but the agency announcement does not assign a single combined dollar value to every partner contribution.
The pilot's completion times, placement quality and career outcomes will not be known until cohorts progress through the program. The planned student total and university count may change as awards and partnerships are implemented.
